Sulphide-containing waste rock, ores and tailings are likely to produce acid rock drainage (ARD) when they are exposed to oxidizing atmospheres. It is possible to create a self-sealing top cap on the reaction waste rock and tailings by reacting the produced acid with lime and or limestone. Laboratory cylindrical container tests were conducted using acid waste rock and lime and / or limestone on its surface. The test results show that limestone and lime react with acidic rocks and produce a hard layer of gypsum and amorphous iron hydroxide on their surface. This hard layer can greatly reduce the effective permeability of the cylindrical container. The results show that using the hard layer produced as a chemical cap significantly reduces the penetration of rainwater or snow water into the acidic waste rock or tailings. Unlike traditional methods of covering with clay and high-density polyethylene (HDPE), the chemical cover will be self-sealing.
