Blast furnace zinc smelting is now a recognized industrial method. The blast furnace shaft was originally conceived as a gas-solid reactor in which a gas-solid phase reaction took place in the shaft and the gangue and molten metal flowed into the hearth after the gangue had melted. The charge is sintered or pelletized to provide a mixed zinc-lead oxide morphology with high porosity and high permeability to help diffuse gaseous material from the reaction zone.
