Tess of the D ’Urbervilles is an excellent novel by Thomas Hardy, a British writer whose hero Tess is a tragic figure. Tess ’s tragic ending is caused by many factors. This paper mainly discusses the roots of Tess’ s tragedy from both the social and the personal perspectives.
