BACKGROUND: Children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) have more attention deficits and learning difficulties in China, but few reports on their memory and executive function. Purpose: To assess the memory and executive function of ADHD. Design: A case-control study based on diagnosis. Location and Subjects: A total of 45 children in the case group were children from the Fourth People’s Hospital of Zhenjiang City from August 2001 to February 2002, 39 males and 6 females, aged 7 to 14 years. A total of 45 children in the control group, a grade 1 to 6 students in Zhenjiang City, 39 males and 6 females, aged 7 to 14 years. Methods: 45 children with normal ADHD and 45 children with ADHD were tested by Digital Breadth Test in Wechsler Intelligence Scale and Logical Memory and Visible Memory in Wechsler Memory Scale and Wisconsin Card Sorting Test. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: A comparison of executive function between children with ADHD and normal children and between subtypes of ADHD. Using Gong Wei Yao standardized Chinese Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children and the Wisconsin Card Classification Test to assess memory and executive function. RESULTS: The numbers of breadth, logic memory, visual memory, and total number of tests in Wisconsin card, number of correct responses, number of persistent errors, number of unsolicited errors, and number of categories in the ADHD group (15.12 ± 2.00,9.98 ± 4.16,17.06 ± 3.83 , 105.52 ± 24.75, 21.17 ± 3.43, 45.87 ± 21.02, 22.99 ± 8.47, 1.09 ± 0.31) compared with the normal control group (22.23 ± 1.08, 20.17 ± 2.72, 21.88 ± 6.15, 63.36 ± 12.37, 41.13 ± 10.25, 23.97 ± 7.12, 10.68 ± 5.80,3.91 ± 1.68), the difference was significant (t
