Breaking the old tradition On March 6, this year, the lobby of the French Academy in Paris, many journalists, writers in France and other countries, and the masses eagerly awaited the announcement of the results of the new by-election. This candidate is a woman writer. Before that, no more than one woman was elected as academician in the establishment of the Institut france for 345 years. Last fall, the woman litterateur Margaret Yosemite was nominated for a Fellow of the Faculty of France. This immediately sparked heated debate at the French Academy and the French academia. Although the statute of the Institut de France has never provided for a ban on women, it has always been the “men’s club”. Therefore, the history of many talented female writers, female scholars have been turned away. Many people are concerned about the breakthroughs that the French Academy can sustain in its three-hundred-year-old tradition.
