石鲁从二十世纪五十年代起进行山水、人物创作就开始对传统进行了深入的反思,其山水画在笔墨、图式、意境等方面进行了全方位的探索,而这种探索都建立在对传统深刻而独到的理解上。“以意命笔”贯穿了石鲁创作的始终,创作于1960年的《东方欲晓》是石鲁开创性和探索精神的集中体现。“以意命笔”、“以神写形”使得作品能够超出图解式的模式,充满新意、灵性十足又惊心动魄,用山水画反映革命历史题材取得成功,为革命题材创作提供了范本。石鲁在由传统走向现代过程中从理论到实践做出许多开创性探索,成为中国画革新发展的成功典范。
