Some Chinese sayings describe the affinity between the lips and the teeth, but for those suffering from cleft lips and palates, the affinity is far from perfect. Smile Angel Foundation and Operation Smile China now work hand in hand to bring back the affinity to children and young adults from poverty-stricken families who suffer from cleft lips and palates.
The partnership between the two is considered perfect for the synergy of their respective strengths. Smile Angel Foundation is initiated by diva singer Wang Fei and her film star husband Li Yapeng, both high-profile showbiz celebrities in China. They gave birth to a daughter with a cleft lip in May 2006. The daughter had the repair operation in USA. Founded on November 21, 2006, Smile Angel Foundation named after the daughter is a special-purpose public foundation under the aegis of China Red Cross Foundation.
Operation Smile, an international not-for-profit medical service organization, enjoys a worldwide reputation for its charity work for decades. It was created by Dr. Bill and Kathy Magee in 1982 in America and has so far provided cleft lip and palate repair surgeries to more than 300,000 children in 50 countries and regions across the world. Operation Smile was introduced to China in 1991 by Dr. Han Kai and Dr. Lin Jing who studied in America. So far, more than 1,600 patients in 30 cities and counties in 15 provinces and autonomous regions in China have benefited from the surgical treatment provided by Operation Smile.
Dr. Alice Chiu, vice chairman of Operation Smile China Medical Mission and a high-profile business tycoon and philanthropist, is a friend of Wang Fei and Li Yapeng. She introduced the Operation Smile China Medical Mission to the couple.
Dr. Han Kai attended the launching ceremony of Smile Angel Foundation, witnessing the latest cooperation of a Chinese organization with the international organization.
In December, 2007, Operation Smile set up China’s first charity specialty hospital for reconstructive surgeries on facial deformities in Hangzhou. Li Yapeng, the joint founder of Smile Angel Foundation, flew to Hangzhou to take a close look at the famous organization in action.
Li Yapeng visited the hospital again in May, 2008 during his publicity visit to Hangzhou. Unaware of the Operation Smile hospital in existence, the host brought Li to another hospital. Li later went to the Operation Smile hospital alone and quietly. What he saw was convincing: the charity hospital operates in compliance with international standard; it is located at Fengqi Road in downtown Hangzhou; the wards are in very good condition. Li Yapeng was touched.
The next day he contacted Dr. Han Kai of Operation Smile and Wu Wei, CEO of Operation Smile China. They spent next 7 hours talking about details of working together and formulating plans.
In July, 2008, Angel Project started officially in cooperation with Smile Angel Foundation, pumping much needed money to Operation Smile and boosting its presence in China. Li Yapeng and Wang Fei also bring much needed publicity to Operation Smile and to the issue of cleft lips and palates. People in China for the first time become keenly aware of the gravity of facial deformities in China.
In December, 2008 Li Yapeng came back to Hangzhou to attend a special program at Zhejiang Television. The program was tailored for Smile Angel Foundation. Li vowed again in the program that Smile Angel Foundation and Operation Smile would repair all young patients of cleft lips and palates in China.
So far, nearly 1,000 children have been beneficiaries of Angel Project. □
