《Nature》创刊于1869年11月11日,其目的旨在迅速传播科研成果和使公众广受教育,其定位兼顾学术期刊和科学杂志,即所刊载的科学论文要求具较高的新闻性和广泛的读者群。 《Nature》的现任主编Philip Campbell博士在“《Nature》杂志与中国科学家”(见《中国科学基金》,1998年第3期)一文中承诺:《Nature》能够接纳任何地方的优秀科学论文,保证在处理来稿时不带地区性的偏见;《Nature》力求全面均衡地报道所有学科的科研成果;《Nature》不收取版面费(但彩色图片的费用作者应尽可能地支付)。
