The “typical American” published in 1991 laid the position of Ren Bilian in Chinese American literature. With multiculturalism being universally accepted by American society and the rise of ethnic consciousness, people began to ponder over the meaning of “typical American.” By using Stuart Hall’s bi-axiom of cultural attributes, this essay elaborates on the new definition of “typical American ” by Ren Bi Lian, and concludes that “typical American ” is not exactly a citizen Concept, not by race and descent, but by the original ethnic culture and the common culture of the United States formed under the dialogue.
