The surface properties of coated paper were studied over time by changes in the surface hydrophobicity of laboratory and industrially produced coated papers. The apparent contact angle of the droplets on the paper surface was measured in the weeks after production. The hydrophobicity of all patterns increases with the aging of the paper, which includes the base paper that is applied to mechanical base paper with conventional coatings and base paper that is made from cotton linters. Aging is accelerated by heat treatment because heat treatment increases the apparent contact angle and accelerates time-dependent behavior. These changes may be due to latex particles dispersed in the coating.
