清末民国(1840-1949)的上海政治、经济、文化、社会都具有典型的特点,城市化进程快速发展,人口数量剧增、城市经济的高速发展,城市人群职业不断分化,新的社会阶层产生,多元消费方式出现。伴随本土文化对外来文化和移民文化兼容并蓄熔炼成独特的海派文化,这个时期的工艺美术的变化也是突出的。本文通过对清末民国上海珠玉市场的发展轨迹的研究,提出清末民国上海珠玉汇市缘于太平天国运动期间,南京和苏州地区的珠玉商人避难至此,随着上海城市经济的高速发展迅速达到鼎盛期,最终在解放后由于公私合营而逐渐消失。
