1895年洛仑兹提出著名的洛仑兹力公式时,麦克斯韦已经去世16年了。可见,麦克斯韦是在不清楚磁场对电荷的作用力的情况下提出变化的磁场产生涡旋电场的假设,这在当时无疑是合理的。现在我们已经知道磁场对电荷的作用力是洛仑兹力,而且清楚产生感生电动势和动生电动势的作用力都是洛仑兹力时,可以得出涡旋电场力的本质就是洛仑兹力的一个分力,涡旋电场线是这个分力线。涡旋电场是个等效电场,并非真实存在。电磁感应的机制就是洛仑兹力做功,实现电场能与其它形式能量的相互转化。
