如果在当今时代讨论鲁迅与传统文化这个话题,鲁迅一定是处于某种不利地位的,这是因为,全面复兴传统文化、尤其是复兴儒家文化传统,在今天几乎成了一种政治正确,并因而具有一种不容置疑的合理性。但是,就鲁迅与传统文化这个话题来说,弄明白鲁迅对传统的批判究竟触及到它的哪些问题并对这些问题做出有效思考又是非常欠缺的。从鲁迅方面看,他的批判所做的更多的是以一种近乎现象学的方式去揭示中国道德主义思想传统规定下的政治生态和人性状况。由于他所揭示的东西与这个传统本身之间的那种本质性的内在关联,这种揭示所产生的实际批判力量就比那些直接针对传统本身的单纯批判要深刻得多;而着眼于鲁迅所揭示的东西来反思这个传统,则不仅会发现它的许多人们在通常情况下很难看到的深层问题,而且,也会让今天那些意图全面复活儒家传统的所谓新儒家们自身的思想处境变得荒谬与尴尬。
