Joseph Heller’s “Twenty-Two Army Rules” is considered to be an excellent absurd anti-war novel. Few critics have noticed a more important supporting role - Hunger Joe, described as often having nightmares, and none of the critics studying Hunger Joe’s nightmare and nightmare causes. This paper attempts to interpret the nightmare of Hunger Joe in “The Twenty-Two Military Regulations” from the perspective of psychoanalysis. Borrowing Freud’s theory of dream-release and Hartmann’s theory of nightmares analysis to analyze Hunger Joe’s nightmare and its causes.
