著名图书馆学家S.R.阮冈纳赞早在1931年发表了《图书馆学五原则》(亦有译为“五定律”)一书,从根本上阐述了图书馆应该为之努力的目标,使图书馆事业纳入了科学轨道。“书为人用”原则是五原则中的一项基本原则,其它四项原则可由这一原则引伸、推理而得。三十年代初,阮冈纳赞提出“书是为了用的”(书为人用)原则,针对历史上对图书馆基本职能是“收藏”的传统观念提出了挑战,为图书馆事业生气勃勃的发展奠定了基础。它以简明易懂的字句,“阐明了图书馆的性质和任务,指出出了图书馆工作的出发点和目的”。
