紫外线灯消毒比较方便,但若使用不当往往达不到消毒的目的。紫外线是一种低能量的电磁辐射,当微生物受到照射时,可引起细胞内成分、特别是核酸、原浆蛋白与酶的化学变化,致使微生物死亡。紫外线灯发射出的紫外线的波长在180.0~400.0毫微米之间,一般多以253.7毫微米作为杀菌紫外线波长的代表。低压汞气灯分热阴极与冷阴极两种,前者发射出的紫外线有95%为253.7毫微米波长,且强度较高。因而以消毒为目的要选用热阴极低压汞气灯。灯管玻璃质量也影响发射紫外线,以石英作原料的灯管较好。
