This paper reviews experimental and theoretical studies of coconut breeding and suggests ways to increase copra production. The biology of flowers is briefly discussed, demonstrating that cross-pollinated coconuts are cross-pollinated. The possibility of mother tree selection was evaluated; however, the experimental evidence indicates that this technique is ineffective, possibly due to the low heritability of coconut production. Nursery seedlings can increase production, but this improvement is not hereditary. The possible value of a geographical variant should be identified. Identification of progeny as the most reliable method of identifying dominant plants is considered and methods of utilizing such plants are discussed. The potential value of hybrid seeds needs accurate identification.
