On April 17th, 2001, South Korean Carrier “ Da Jong” and Hongkong’s Carrier “Da Wang” bumped into each other at the entrance of Yangtze River near the China East Sea. Though Shanghai MSA and the environmental protection department took timely actions to clean up the pollution, the 700-ton styrene spilt by “Da Jong” marked the world ever-large styrene-leakage accident. According to WHO, the styrene is a. kind of cancer-maker, strongly corrosive and poisonous, so the damage was even more serious than the oil pollution. This leakage accident not only affected the maritime eco-chain but also polluted the air and threatened the people’s life in the surrounding area.
