China formally applied to the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade in 1986, demanding the resumption of its status as a signatory to the GATT. According to the Uruguay Round Agreement, the GATT concluded its historic mission by the end of 1994 and its successor organization, the World Trade Organization, came into full operation in 1995. According to the regulations, the GATT and the World Trade Organization should coexist for one year in 1995. For nearly half a century, GATT has played an important role in developing world multilateral trade relations, curbing trade protection and promoting trade liberalization, promoting the growth of international trade and promoting the development of world economy. The establishment of the World Trade Organization has not only inherited the achievements of the previous GATT negotiations but also expanded its basic principles from goods trade to service trade, intellectual property and investment measures, etc.
