Shanxi is regarded as one of the birthplaces of the chinese nation and is called “the Land of Coal” mainly for its numerous cultural and ancient architechtural relics. as well as its rich coal resources.During the past 50 years since the founding of New China, especially thc 20 years of reform and opening-up,Shanxi has witnessed remarkable achievements in all fields. It’s economic power has been greatly enhanced, as a result of which Shanxi’s GDP has reached 160110 million RMB, i. e 2707. 7 times increase of that in 1952. Its infrastuctural construction has been gradually inproved. By the end of 1998, the total length of the provincial roads was 51669 km, forming a comparatively modem comprehensive net of transportation. Also, great successes have been made in economic structural adjustment, rural economy, domestic and international trade, science and technology, education, as well as in housing.
