On February 6, the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) announced that for the first time in a row, the global food price index dropped for three consecutive months in January as the prices of cereals, sugar, oil and meat dropped more than the prices of dairy products. The FAO Food Price Index, based on the international trade prices of packaged food commodities, averaged 203.4 points in January 2014, down 1.3% and 4.4% respectively on a month-on-year basis and on a year-on-year basis. FAO said prices have declined due to adequate supply, but increased demand, such as the acceleration of Asian imports, may limit the decline. The same day FAO also released the latest statistics on world cereal production. data
