什么是联绵词,诸家解说大抵相同,即由两个音节联缀成义而不能分开解释的单纯复音词。这种定义对联绵词的解释和教学来说诚然有益,然在读书、备课之际,笔者感到联绵词的情况比较复杂,并不如上述那样单纯,有必要进行再思考。众所周知,从上古汉语书面语看,单音词的优势是明显的。愈往远去愈是如此。先秦时代的典籍中,出现了数量可观的复音词,其中包括联绵词。追溯这些复音词的来历,通常经由如下途径:
