Janet Yellen is a famous contemporary American economist and currently serves as chairman of the Federal Reserve. Her research covers a wide range of topics ranging from unemployment and the labor market, the micro-foundations of New Keynesian economics, monetary and fiscal policies to international trade and investment policies. She is a quintessential Keynesian scholar and has made an outstanding contribution to establishing the micro-foundations of New Keynesian economics. This article describes Yellen’s contribution to unemployment in the labor market, the micro-foundation of New Keynesian economics and macroeconomic policy. Yellen emphasized the importance of realistic elements in economic theory and paid attention to the micro-foundation of theory and strict logical derivation in the development of economic theory. The contribution of Yellen not only advances the theoretical research in these fields, but also has a direct impact on the design and implementation of public policies and the U.S. economy.
