The U.S. Department of Energy’s Idaho National Engineering Laboratory is currently researching and developing how to safely store spent fuel from commercial nuclear reactors in dry gas. The research project will help the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission establish a permit standard for the dry storage of nuclear waste, and will ease the shortage of submarine storage waste fuel sites at the location of the commercial nuclear reactor. The research project was invested by the Nuclear Engineering Commission’s Engineering Department, and research was conducted by the Idaho Thermal Fuel Performance Planning Department and the nuclear material evaluation effectiveness research department.
