Heat treatment workers have been testing so-called “polymeric quenchants” for more than two decades, often providing cooling characteristics between water and petroleum products. This quench medium is based on water-soluble polymers such as cellulose derivatives, polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), sodium polyacrylate (PSA), polyacrylamide, polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP), polyalkyl Oxazoline (PEOX), and polyether (PAO). Although similar in some respects, polymeric quenchants are distinctly different from each other in their family members. These differences can significantly affect the quenching performance. Therefore, the heat treatment workers need to have a basic understanding of this, what makes a polymer different from the other to help them for a given application can choose the most appropriate quenching medium.
