In the recent two decades, many attempts have been made to apply linguistic theory to language teaching. Looking back at this history, we can clearly see that although traditional grammar is not enough to undertake this task, the modern grammar theories and descriptions developed on the basis of it have also far failed to provide a satisfactory solution to the problems of teachers. If we come to the conclusion that linguistics can not help updating the language teaching method, it is too early to say that it is true that language studies are not yet complete and it is impossible to provide a panacea for language teaching.
