From 2000 to 2005, China’s gross domestic product (GDP) grew at an average annual rate of 9.3%. The annual consumer price index (CPI) rose only 1.2% annually. In the first half of 2006, China’s GDP grew by 10.9% and the CPI rose by only 1.3%, a decrease of 1.0 percentage point from the same period of last year. However, ordinary people feel the current price increase is so intense that they do not believe the overall current price level has only risen by 1.3% in the region. Most of the central bank
