To compare the effects of Verapamil and Propranolol on blood glucose and substance metabolism in dialysis patients with insulin-independent diabetes and mild to moderate hypertension. Methods: Forty-six patients with non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus and those with mild to moderate hypertension were dialysis patients at the KfH hemodialysis center in Folda, Germany and the KfH hemodialysis center in Berlin. Fasting blood glucose, hemoglobin A1c, acid, insulin, cholesterol, and triglyceride were measured three months after treatment with Verapamil and Propranolol respectively. Heart rate and blood pressure were recorded before dialysis. RESULTS: Verapamil had no adverse effect on blood glucose and substance metabolism. Propranolol caused an increase in blood glucose, acid and hemoglobin A1c. CONCLUSIONS: Propranolol has a risk of causing and / or exacerbating arteriolar vascular disease and cerebrovascular accidents in diabetic dialysis patients
