Information technology is of paramount importance to the economy of advanced industrial countries, especially to the future of politics and culture. This is evidenced by the fierce technical competition between the United States, Japan and Western Europe (including the Federal Republic of Germany). The author discusses how information technology can lead to profound changes in economic structure with strong growth momentum at an international level, as well as decentralized and centralized processes. This process will lead to foreign economic and political conflicts, and produce the winner and the loser. The key is controlling the root causes of conflicts in future trade and industrial policies and preventing trade protectionism. Looking at the world market, Western Europe must work together in areas such as microelectronics, telex and database to reach a “critical state.” The first and foremost issue is to further create the basic conditions for economic and social change in Europe’s vast internal market, accumulate the wealth of ideas, develop a spirit of adventure and awareness of what is done.
