Drainage and soil strength determine sound soil management, while structural changes due to wet rake and dewatering affect rice and subsequent dry-crop growth. The hydrological properties of paddy fields and their relationship to soil properties should be studied. More trained physicists are needed to conduct these studies and to enhance the collaboration between physicists and agronomists.
