Peanut is composed of cultivated species and unnamed wild species. In 1973, Gregory divided the genus Peanut into seven families based on morphology and hybrid affinity. Protoplasts include another tetraploid species and at least eight other diploid species except for 2n = 40 cultivars. According to Smartt and Grigory (1967), hybrids are obtained from peanut cultivars and protoplasts. However, crossbreeding with distant kin is impossible.
