Objective To explore the predictive power of the goal failure and ability perception of university athletes on the fear of failure and their interaction effects. Methods: A total of 360 A group athletes from four universities in Taiwan, with an average age of 20.03 years, volunteered to fill in a questionnaire to measure the orientation of exercise target, ability perception and fear of failure. Results: Through multi-level regression analysis, it was found that task orientation, self-orientation and ability perception can effectively predict the failure of fear. CONCLUSIONS: This study argues that athletes are less likely to fail in performance when their athletic motivation tends to emphasize effort, progress, and sophistication, or that athletes consciously possess a higher level of athleticism. Conversely, if an athlete’s goal orientation favors defeating others as Ability indicators, they will be more afraid to lose the game or poor performance.
