The U.S. Air Force is testing a test device that detects the corrosion of a plane before it suddenly fails to ensure its safety during flight. The device, developed by Battelle, was designed to mount tiny metal sensing elements on hard-to-reach parts of the aircraft and then automatically monitor changes in the resistance of such sensing elements, thereby detecting the onset and intensification of corrosion of aircraft components. In corrosion, as the sensor cross-sectional area decreases, will inevitably lead to increased resistance. All signals from each sensor are sent to a central data logger mounted on the receiving system of the aircraft and the corresponding rate of corrosion is calculated by the data logger. The Battelle unit’s prototype has been approved by the laboratory
