There is an urgent need for new drugs for the treatment of amebiasis, leishmaniasis, malaria and trypanosomiasis. This article discusses the potential of natural products as a source of anti-protozoal drugs from the perspective of the biochemical differences between protozoa and their hosts; describes biochemical differences between protozoa and host in several aspects; and describes how people exploit this difference (Alkaloids, terpenes, quinones and other components) that have been developed as anti-protozoal drugs from plants, with emphasis on the mode of action and development of the anti-protozoal drugs Selective anti-protozoal drug potential.
