近年来,润滑研究对象已扩展到包括金属弹性承载元件。这一扩充部分称为弹性流体动力润滑。新近,注意力更转向如橡胶这样低弹性模量材料的弹性流体动力问题。往复运动密封机理的研究是这方面一个非常重要的发展。 人们对密封的研究早已认识到,影响密封性能的主要因素是磨损与漏失。1962年Muller在关于往复运动O型密封圈的研究中指出,在一个动态柔性密封及其配合表面之间存在着润滑薄膜,正是这一润滑薄膜控制着密封的漏失与磨损。根据润滑理论可知,润滑薄膜的厚度取决于密封与其接触表面间压力分布曲线上的压力梯度:
In recent years, lubrication studies have expanded to include metal elastic load-bearing elements. This expansion is called elastohydrodynamic lubrication. More recently, attention has shifted to the problem of elastic hydrodynamics of low modulus materials such as rubber. The research of reciprocating seal mechanism is a very important development in this respect. People have long been aware of the study of the seal, the main factor affecting the sealing performance is wear and tear. In his study of reciprocating O-rings in 1962, Muller pointed out that there is a lubricant film between a dynamic, flexible seal and its mating surface that controls the leak and wear of the seal. According to the lubrication theory, the thickness of the lubricating film depends on the pressure gradient on the pressure distribution curve between the seal and its contact surface:
