Inmarsat’s board of directors, which convened in London in late November 1999, has decided to continue the development of Inmarsat’s fourth-generation system with an investment of 1.4 billion U.S. dollars. The space portion of the system includes two orbiting satellites and one ground-based satellite. Inmarsat-4 offers users a variety of personal multimedia communications (PMCs) at transmission rates of 144 kbps / s to 432 kbps / s. Inmarsat’s PMC devices are portable, lightweight, satellite modems for the Internet that are used in conjunction with mobile notebook computers for multimedia communications. Areas of business include Internet-based e-commerce, content-based online services, video conferencing and voice telephony.
