一八六一年至一八六五年,美国南、北战争结束之后,接踵而来的是一个资本主义大发展的时期。新城市的崛起,工业的发展,人口的增加……预示着一个发达国家的兴起。随着经济的发展,音乐文化方面也提出了要求。当时,各种投机事业极为盛行,不少人一夜之间就发大财,更迫切需要有娱乐的机会,休息的场所。而美国的音乐水平又比较低,所以,欧洲许多著名音乐家都跑到美国去开音乐会赚钱。
