我队矿区地层大都为大理岩、矿层及闪长岩。大理岩和闪长岩节理发育,裂隙及溶洞极多,除钻孔漏失冲洗液现象极为严重外,大理岩中有几百分厘至十几公尺深度不等的黄泥夹层,钻进时有缩径现象,另外因岩层较破碎,孔壁亦有不同程度的掉块现象,部分地段矿层及闪长岩顶板风化严重,钻进中有岩矿粉坍塌现象。在上述复杂地层中钻进,有些钻孔使用粘度30秒左右的泥浆,虽能解决部分问题,但因地层特殊,单纯使用泥浆还不能完全保全孔壁。为保证顺利钻进,部分钻孔必须下入套管护孔。由于地层复杂,套管下入后难以起拔,给工作带来损失,因此在建队初期,
