1984年,为了参加国庆35周年游行,北京大学的学生们很早就开始训练。9月30日的彩排过后,生物系细胞专业八一级的李禹和常生等同学觉得,光是呼喊口号、挥舞花束,太过于程式化,他们要自己制作一个横幅来表达心意。他们首先想到的是要给领袖写点什么。写什么好呢,大家开始商议起来。起初想到了“邓小平万岁”,但“万岁”这两个字封建味道浓厚,所以这个建议一提出就被大家否决了。有人脱口而出说
