In the Ming and Qing Dynasties, the merchants holding the business reputation of the Chinese trade created the pattern of “no town without emblem”. However, with the changing times, the phenomenon described by this proverb is not exactly the same as the historical facts of the merchants. Before the dynasty of the Qing dynasty, the Huizhou merchants were in a flourishing period. At this time, the Huizhou merchants dominated the economy of the major towns in the southern part of the Yangtze River. Therefore, the phenomenon described in “no emblem without a town ” coincided with the actual situation of Huizhou merchants . However, in the modern era, the merchant traders generally declined in both traditional and emerging markets or in the big cities such as Shanghai and Hankou. The role of the merchants was reversed. From the old market economy The protagonist of power, relegated as a supporting role. During this period, there was a big gap between the phenomenon described in the proverb “There is no emblem and the town” and the historical facts of the merchants. To have a correct understanding of this proverb is of positive significance for us to fully understand the Huizhou merchants, especially the merchants in the modern transition period.
