我出生在广东省汕头市一个信仰基督教的知识分子家庭,父亲做过多年中学教员,我兄弟姐妹9人,从小接受了比较好的教育。1935年我毕业于燕京大学化学系,后来在中央研究院上海化学所读研究生。日本人占领上海后我去了长沙,1938年在长沙秘密加入中国共产党,1944年自费公派赴美留学,获得卡乃基理工学院化学工程学博士。我于1950年回国,起初在清华大学做教授,不久后调到石油管理总局,在石油化工行业一直工作至今。今天我想和青年朋友们谈谈我人生中的几件大事,如果对大家能有一点点启示,我将非常欣慰。
I was born in Shantou, Guangdong Province, a Christian family of intellectuals, my father had many years of secondary school teachers, my brothers and sisters 9 people, had a better education. In 1935 I graduated from the Department of Chemistry at Yenching University and later at the Shanghai Institute of Chemistry graduate school. After the Japanese occupation of Shanghai, I went to Changsha. In 1938, I joined the Communist Party in Changsha secretly. In 1944, I sent myself to the United States to study in the United States and received a Ph.D. in chemical engineering from Carnegie Institute of Technology. I returned to China in 1950, initially as a professor at Tsinghua University, soon after transferred to the General Administration of Petroleum, in the petrochemical industry has been working so far. Today I would like to talk to young friends about several major events in my life. I would be very pleased if there is a little enlightenment for all of you.
