Since the late 1960s, due to a series of biological and other factors, significant changes have taken place in the world’s fisheries. Due to large catches of Peruvian anchovy (more than 12 million tonnes), catches of marine products worldwide continue to grow at rates of over 4% annually. However, in the latter half of the 1970s, as a result of the reduction of catfish catches in Peru, the reserves of Atlantic-Scandinavian herring declined and the establishment of a 200-nautical mile economic zone also led to a sharp drop in the total catch of fish and other aquatic products.
