Japan’s economic studies on forestry mainly focus on the following issues: (1) Research on all issues concerning mountain forests The study on all issues concerning mountain forests mainly focuses on the study of mountain forests in terms of land ownership. Land is the basic component of forestry, forestry is a kind of land industry. The definition of forest in Japan’s Forest Law as “wood or bamboo as a group of existing land and standing bamboo on this land” underscores the indivisibility of land and forestry. In land-owned Japan, land ownership, specifically the ownership of mountain forests, directly determines the type, level of operation and state of operation of the forestry and, to a large degree, decides the rise and fall of forestry.
