People always talk about the “7 year itch”, when you’ve been with someone for 7 years and you start to get sick of one another!Well, lucky for us we don’t have that problem, but we have another kind of problem—the 7 month itch. We’ve sat still now for 7 months and our travel itch has definitely come back. It’s just waiting to be scratched2!For those of you who don’t know what this“itch” is, it’s the feeling a traveller gets when they’ve sat still for too long, when they know there’s so much more to be seen and done. They are getting antsy3 and ready to move on, to pack their backpacks and explore more of the beautiful world.
In fact, travelling can not only help realize your ideas of what you want to do, but it can also introduce you to passions of life or bring to light something you never realized you loved.
Josh Gaston, a 31 year old graduate student, is currently pursuing a Master’s in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages—something he likely never would have done had he not traveled after graduation. Josh also spent a year in China, “Because I didn’t really know what I wanted to do after graduating. But while I was there, I found that I really enjoyed teaching.” he said. He also discovered another passion4: traveling. After a year in China, he went to Chile and then Korea, and then Southeast Asia and Australia. Over the course of about four and a half years, Josh taught, worked, and backpacked all over the world. “If I hadn’t decided to go to China and then to Chile, I’m not sure what I would be doing today.” he said.
It’s also such a great learning experience seeing the world through the eyes of different cultures and people. It’s important to develop an appreciation for the world is to give you a larger perspective. You can certainly live, succeed and spending time immersed in a different culture or cultures. It can affect every aspect of your life, from how you treat others, to how you view the world, and even how you treat yourself—It’s an intangible5 and immeasurable6 gift.
You’ll learn independence. Regardless of how independent you may be now, or have been since childhood, travelling builds on and cultivates that independence in a whole new way. When you’re separated from home, you’re forced to learn to take care of yourself and learn how to live in ways you never thought possible. And you don’t have to go to a place where your mother tongue is a foreign language to gain that independence. When you are travelling, you are pushed out of your comfort zone7 and forced to talk with strangers. Sometimes this leads to meeting the most amazing people you may ever meet in your life.
Whether you backpack, or visit a few places as a tourist, or spending some time outside your country will undoubtedly8 further your self discovery in ways you never knew. It’s amazing what travelling teaches you about yourself. You’ll learn more about your strengths and weaknesses, likes and dislikes. You’ll push yourself to do things you never imagined and those things will make you a stronger, smarter, kinder, more well rounded person. You can learn you could withstand a lot and that you could survive on your own. When you are on your own, lost, carrying your luggage in the heat, and have no cell phone to communicate, you learn very quickly that you can sit on the sidewalk and cry about it, or pick yourself up and handle it.
Travelling is one of those experiences that will likely change you for life. Go meet amazing people and the colorful world. Create a life experience for yourself that you can’t explain to anyone except those who have also done it. Travel!Do it!Do not think twice!
