A: After the First Opium War, in 1842 the Qing government was forced to sign with the British invaders the first unequal treaty in modern history of China, the “Sino-British Treaty of Nanjing,” which stipulated that the Qing government should pay 21 million yuan to the United Kingdom. The indemnity was paid in units of silver dollars, while all the indemnities paid by the Qing government to all foreign unequal treaties were paid by the two banks of silver. As a result, the number of claims in the Nanjing Treaty has often been misunderstood to be 21 million “two”. Then why did the claims in the “Nanjing Treaty” be paid in silver dollars instead of in silver? This was mainly due to the problems of insufficient weight, fineness, and uneven weight of China’s silver, silver and silver coins all over the country.
