This article examines the situational variations of the third-language acquisition of Putonghua among American students of different Chinese proficiency levels. The results show that systematic tone variation exists in American students’ acquisition of the third Chinese dialect, which is affected to some extent by contextual context. However, its performance is opposite to that proposed by Tarone (1983) in the “Interlanguage style continuum” theory, which brings a new understanding of the nature of the context effect. In this paper, we consider that the degree of attention is not the necessary and sufficient condition to cause linguistic variation, and other factors will affect the linguistic variation to some extent. At the same time, we try to supplement the theory of “Interlanguage style continuum”.
