荆州棉区是湖北商品棉生产的重要基地,常年植棉面积约400万亩,占全省棉田总面积的50％左右。1952年本区开始引入岱字15号进行试验鉴定,1955年已基本普及全区。该品种在生产上表现产量高、品质好,但由于我区为两热棉区,其结铃吐絮尚嫌不够集中,成熟较晚。为了迅速选育出适宜于本区栽培的丰产、优质而早熟的新品种,进一步满足生产上的需要,我们从1956年开始以岱字15号为改进对象,针对其缺点开展系统选育工作。荆棉3号就是这样选育出来的。
