Most ilmenite improves grade by reducing the amount of alumina and silica coating on its surface. Batch tests and extended pilot studies have shown that Hicom mills can successfully remove most of the alumina and silica cladding from the ilmenite surface as a high intensity scrubber to improve product quality and recovery. Although commonly used as a grinding equipment, Hicom mills have also found applications in high-intensity scrubbing applications such as scrubbing in diamond and sand dressing plants. Small scale scrub tests on ilmenite using a batch Hicom mill showed that the surface coating content can be effectively reduced at the input energy of 5 ~ 20 kW · h / t. A typical example is that when the input energy is 10 kW · h / t, the content of Al 2 O 3 in the scrub products is reduced by 34% and the content of SiO 2 by 30%. The result is equivalent to the acid leaching process, and the value of the product is also increased. The level of input energy is related to the decrease of Al 2 O 3 and SiO 2 content in the product.
