Trying various types of lignite and black lignite pulverized coal instead of natural gas to roast iron ore pellets is the focus of an ongoing study by the United States Bureau of Mining’s Twin Cities Institute of Metallurgy. The immediate purpose of this pilot project is to determine the degree of contamination of the pellets with the deposition of low-melting ash which is emitted during combustion of the solid fuel and the extent to which the lining of the furnace lining is fired. Industrial experiments were conducted using experimental grate-rotary kiln simulations. As Robert S. Kaplan and Ralf C. Kerby stated in a paper presented at the Grand Forks Lignite Conference in North Dakota in May 1975. ]
