遭重创矢志不移香港合和公司主席胡应湘一直被公认是香港基建业的先驱。早在80年代后期,就开始返回内地发展高速公路和电力建设,同时在东南亚兴建铁路交通设施。香港回归前,曾经有人预言,有亚洲基建大王之称的胡应湘是1997之后香港最有钱的人。然而,90年代末突如其来的亚洲金融风暴,令他的基建宏图遭到重创:在泰国的高速公路、铁路项目中途搁浅,印度尼西亚的电厂建设半截停建。前者令公司撇账54亿港币,后者损失44亿港币。但这并没能摧毁他的雄心和斗志,生意失意,他韬光养晦,把精力集中在香港的酒店和住宅项目上,默默耕耘。作为一个土木建筑工程师,他不失本色孜孜以求,全情投入设计与建设,受到香港业界的好评与钦佩。回忆当时的情景,他至今仍感到无奈“真是想不到会那样,早知道早就卖掉所有产业,退休就好了”。不过令他稍觉安慰的是,这次亏损没有拖累银行和朋友,又因为他及时卖出“亚电”减债,使公司避免了危机,但损失最大的就是
Hu Ying Xiang, Chairman of Hong Kong Hehe, has been recognized as a pioneer in the infrastructure industry in Hong Kong. As early as the late 1980s, it began to return to the hinterland for the development of highways and power construction while building rail transport facilities in Southeast Asia.
